FSSAI License and Registration Distinction

All the sectors of the economy have been badly ruptured by the pandemic. The effect of the coronavirus pandemic on India has been largely troublesome in terms of economic activity as well and there has been a huge loss of human lives. It is worthwhile to say that food and agriculture is an important aspect of the Indian economy.

Small businesses and entrepreneurship are the main victims of the pandemic. The aviation and the tourism industry and the pharmaceutical industry are very much affected. Both of these fall under the economy of India. From both the sectors a huge profit is generated. The oil and gas industry and the telecom industry are also the sufferers.

Heavy industries have also suffered a lot due to the pandemic. But the worst sufferer is the food and agriculture sector. Therefore it is very important, especially for the small businesses that are involved in the food and agriculture industry, to get registered under the food license registration in India to run their business smoothly in this pandemic situation.

Before going through the procedures you have to know the details about what is the FSSAI license and FSSAI registration. There is a great difference between these two terms.

What Does FSSAI Mean?

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) was set up under the Food Safety and Standards in the year 2006. It is integrated upon various acts & orders that are executed to handle food-related issues in various departments of India, and also in different ministries. FSSAI originated to render science-based standards for items related to food and to regulate their production, storage, distribution, sale, and import to ensure the availability of secured and Healthy Food For Human consumption.

Basic difference between FSSAI License and Registration

All Food Business Operators (FBO) have to register under FSSAI Registration or FSSAI license if they are participants in the process of storing, producing, distributing, and transporting food products. For all the food business operators in India FSSAI is the legal authority which issues  FSSAI registration or license.

Concept of FSSAI License

The food business operators who have medium and large-scale businesses related to food are required to get an FSSAI License. They will have to acquire either the license provided by the state or the license provided by the central govt. It depends on their business sizes. The manufacturers, marketers, traders transporters, the medium-sized processors need the FSSAI state license from the state government.  Now you can ask how you will know what is a medium-sized FBO.

Well, a medium-sized FBO is one whose annual turnover is not less than Rs 12 lakh and not more than Rs 20 crore. Such an FBO will get the state license. If the annual turnover of any FBO crosses the limit of Rs 20 crore, that will be eligible to get the central license.

On the other hand, if a large-scale business manufacturing, transporting and processing includes international trade regarding their food products, they are required to acquire the central FSSAI Food License. Again you can question what is the basic definition of large-scale business. If any FBO crosses the annual turnover Rs 20 crore limit it is called a large-scale business. These types of businesses will get the central license of FSSAI.

There are two types of FSSAI licenses. One is FSSAI Central License and the other is FSSAI State License. Mainly the medium and large sized businesses and food business operators are covered by the FSSAI License.

FSSAI Registration

FSSAI registration is different from FSSAI food license. The small Food business operators who produce or sell food items, you can say a retailer, a hawker or small vendors temporary stall holders, and those who are included in the small-scale industries. They should have similar conditions like having an annual turnover of not more than Rs 12 lakhs. They will have to produce the food products within 100 kg per day, the handling and the collection of milk within the limit of 500 liters every day. There is also another segment. It is the slaughtering capacity of two large animals or again the slaughtering capability of 10 small animals or 50 poultry birds every day. In the FSSAI registration process, the duration entirely depends on the applicability of the registration process.

However, the FSSAI license and FSSAI registration both are procedures for monitoring and regulating the food manufacturing and storing industry. The basic difference between them is that one is for medium and large-scale-based food operators and the latter is entirely for small-scale-based business operators. However, the online registration process for FSSAI in India is available now. If you have a small business you should go for the registration process for FSSAI in India.
