While countries are at different standing points with the Covid-19 infection and recovery rates, reports suggest that over 1.2 billion children are affected by the pandemic in 186 countries. 

The pandemic has shined a harsh light on disparities, vulnerabilities, and inequalities in the global education system. It has resulted in dramatic changes like adapting to the e-learning model to bridge the learning gap in billions of students due to sudden school closures and students asking for assignment help.

Even though the unprecedented crisis exacerbates various pre-existing drawbacks, leveraging alternate study methods and incorporating technology will reinforce learning in a fast-changing environment.

During the pandemic, 1 in 10 children from low-income countries lacked access to remote learning technology. UNICEF estimates a staggering number – close to 463 million children – who don’t have access to remote learning through any medium. In contrast, 90% of children from high-income countries have access to such learning opportunities, thus creating education inequality.

  • Leveraging public sector schools to serve students from low-income countries can bring together communities, regardless of their birth, race, and background. In middle and high-income countries, private schools should test new pedagogical strategies to expand education reach. 
  • The pandemic has forced educators to use different instructional methods to improve students’ learning processes in remote settings. And as per reports, students respond to virtual learning methods more as compared to traditional learning modules. So schools should focus on developing engaging study materials using ed-tech to provide an improved learning experience. 
  • Deploying educational technology can empower students and educators. In addition, educators and parents should continue to collaborate more to fill the teaching and learning program gap. For example, real-time support from parents and teachers, digital study materials, and play-based lessons will help children learn and overcome communication challenges.
  • The pandemic has given everyone a reality check. Everything is uncertain, so everyone in the education environment should learn to adapt and adjust. Both adaptation and adjustments are critical and require time, understanding, and willingness. Nonetheless, everyone should be prepared to act fast and make changes to learning.

 

Is E-learning the Future of the Post-pandemic World?

Yes. It is.

Those who have access to education technology are likely to agree that online learning has its benefits. It has improved student retention abilities by 25-60% and reduced learning time by taking 40-60% less learning time. Why such drastic change? 

It’s because digital learning instructions are more engaging and easier to grasp and allow students to plan their lessons and learn at their own pace.  

Thus, considering the effectiveness of online learning modules, it’s safe to say that more schools, educators, and parents will use e-learning solutions for lessons and assignments to help students learn better and faster. 

That being said, it’s also important to note that the efficacy of online classes and digital study modules depends on the learners and their parents. 

For example, young learners need more guidance and a proper study environment to replicate the physical study environment. 

More collaboration tools and student engagement methods will exist to promote inclusion and offer personalisation in the coming days. And from the investment aspect, the market is far from drying down. 

Investments in ed-tech were around US$18.66 billion in 2019, which is projected to reach $350 Billion by 2025, owing to the surge in usage, be it study apps, video conferencing tools, or tutoring software. 

Therefore, researchers and educators will invest more time and effort to explore the possibilities of e-learning post the pandemic.

There’s no denying that the education system will emerge stronger with an ambitious vision to change once the global pandemic ends. 

Even though having a vision is essential to bring about changes, we must also acknowledge that articulating a plan requires finance, human support, and endless support from leaders associated with the global education system. 

Sure, people are vulnerable, and most of them are dealing with various consequences of the pandemic. But there is sufficient evidence to show how innovative learning methods can empower learners and prepare them to achieve higher goals. 

From building more public schools to creating allies, everyone must collectively work together to overcome the existing challenges in the education system and harness new opportunities and innovation to take education forward.
